Five Fantastic Window Bailouts

Fri 15 May 2015 James Nuttall

There have been some legendary moments in cinema that have involved either the heroes or villains making majestic (or not so majestic) leaps through windows. Isn’t it funny how none of these windows are ever furnished? You’d think the Emerald City could fork out for some vertical blinds! Anyway, here are five of our favourite moments:

The Wizard of Oz – 1939

Before the Wizard was revealed to be a harmless old professor in this Hollywood classic, largely remembered as one of the most ground-breaking and iconic films of all time, he was seen as a fearsome and ruthless overlord, hidden away in the Emerald City. His terrifying presence and booming commands put the fear of God into each of the four main protagonists in the movie. However, for the cowardly Lion it was a little too much to bear, as he ran from the chamber, down the corridor and straight through one of the emerald windows – literally.

This bailout takes serious courage!

Transformers: Dark of the Moon – 2011

Hardly a jewel in the crown of Hollywood; the third outing in the Transformers film series won the prestigious ‘Obviously Worst Film’ award, as well as nominations for the likes of ‘Worst Picture’, ‘Worst Director’ and ‘Worst Screen Couple’. Dark of the Moon might not be BAFTA material, but, in typical action movie style, it does feature a fantastic bailout of a skyscraper – or rather, several simultaneous bailouts of a skyscraper.

 Tomorrow Never Dies – 1997

Okay, this one is more of a ‘bail-in’ than a bailout, but the sight of a BMW 7-Series blasting through the wall of a multi-story carpark, over the busy street below, and straight through the window of the Rent-A-Car shop across the road is too good to miss out, wouldn’t you agree?

Ever wonder which insurance company is foolish enough to take on Mr Bond?

The Towering Inferno – 1974

One of the most famous disaster movies of all time, The Towering Inferno featured a spectacular bailout of the 65th floor of the Glass Tower hotel by Lorrie, played by Susan Flannery. When the fictional San Francisco hotel becomes ablaze, Flannery’s character is forced to make a dramatic and fatal leap through her hotel window after an explosion blasts through her room.

Die Another Day – 2002

Another James Bond outing starring Pierce Brosnan, Die Anorther Day was the 20th Bond movie, packed with an abundance of gadgets, girls and an ill-advised cameo by Madonna. A stand out scene from this film was when the menacing and mysterious henchman Zao makes a graceful escape from Bond through a stain glass window… top marks for the neat roll upon landing, too!
